Well, looks like wet weather riding is upon us for the Northwest, so I was looking for a high-tech way to weatherproof the ol' Garmin GPS. After several ideas, I settled on the Self-Closing, Reversible GPS Weather Shield...aka

Zip-Lock Sandwich Bag.

I've stamped Motorcycle Gear on the Box and they are for sale at $5 each... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

One of the criteria when purchasing my GPS was that it would be waterproof. I bought a Garmin Nuvi 550, which is waterproof. I even tested it this past Monday when I was caught in a downpour.

I use the jar covers from the Dollar Store. They come in many sizes and the yellow ones you can see the screen alittle better in the rain.

Jar cover, aka Jarhead cover.
They are lockable cages you put over ex marines when you don't want any trouble from them http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Edit;
I knew the term ex marine was not correct. I just didn't know the correct terminology :-[
If any one was offended, I apologize.
Marines are called Jarheads, right? It is not an offensive term, right?

There are no EX Marines...only FORMER Marines. I had that drummed into me by my father and uncles since I can remember...

An "ex Marine" is a dishonorably discharged Marine. I am a former Marine.

I still don't know what a jar cover is.

You are right...I stand corrected!I was only thinking of those with honorable service. Thanks for yours.

I still don't know what a jar cover is.

watch the zip lock bags they are not 100% water proof. yes water resistant. Put some crackers in one and zip lock it and submerse it in water for a day, it will leak through the sides.

They look like a shower cap and are used to cover bowls and the likes.

I edited my above post. http://s2.images.proboards.com/lipsrsealed.gif
Getting back on track, Garmin makes a case that seals the unit from weather. It is called an Aqua Box.
My Zumo is water proof so I don't have to worry about rain.

Man, next time I use a term I'd better be careful! The damn bag they came in says "Colored Jar Covers" so I thought I was okay? They come in, excuse the term "Jar Covers" "Bowl Covers" and the "Salad Bowl" version which has small perforations in them. Am I allowed to say "Colored"? They are Yellow, Pink, Blue & Clear ( which isn't a color!).

I use those bowl covers to cover my air filter when I wash the bike.

Alright, I think I get it now. They are little round stretchy plastic covers that fit over a bowl or something? We don't use them, so I've never seen them. Thanks for indulging me.

Frankly, I couldn't figure out why a jar would need a cover. Jars usually have lids. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I might be looking at getting some larger ones for fitting over my intake when I wash the bike.

It's not offensive unless you say it to a Marine.

Yeah it's only $71.55 from the dealer. Hey, that includes the installation!

Well to be perfectly honest, I was getting gas on my weekly trip north for business and it started to rain pretty hard. As long as I'm moving, the area right behind the sheild usually doesn't get too wet, but I thought it might be coming down hard enough that everything would get wet. Not wanting to give in to the elements and pack up the GPS, I decided to eat my PB&J Sandwich and see if the Zip Lock would protect it. Happy to report that both my tummy and the GPS were happy with the decision to empty the Zip Lock. Necessity is the mother of all invention.

And my dealer charges $95 an hour with a minimum 1 hour for everything, so if you get it for $71, it's a steal. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Ive found that even in the rain its rare for my stuff to get wet behind the fairing, although there was an exception at the rally this summer where I felt like a fire hose was pointed at me. If it really starts pouring, I'll put the gps away.

AHHHH, the memories. :'( That's not a tear on his face, it's rain.
