View Full Version : Who makes these?

I was riding with one of my friends from the dark side today, and on his rear crash guards (in front of his saddlebags) he has these "chap-like" devices. Each one holds a small thermos or water bottle and each has a storage pocket. I could really use something like this to keep bottled water handy when it gets hotter than the surface of the sun here in a few months.

Two questions here:
1- What are these devices called?
2- Has anyone seen them for the Nomad?

Thanks!

Thanks Dano. No water bottle pockets, though. I guess I might be able to have some custom-made, but that would probably be ridiculously expensive.

Those pockets might hold a water bottle. Don't know if you care for this look or not: http://gadgetjq.com/drink_holder.htm

The HD ones do not fit the bars on the Nomad. At least not on the 2002. I wouldn't think the diameter of the bars has changed since then. I have not been able to find any like CactusJack is talking about. Hey dlarue!! There may be another product you guys can make.

Not really what I'm looking for, but thanks, Wolfman.

Maybe I'll ask my buddy if we could try one of his HD chaps on one of my bars. I'd hate like hell to have to go to HD to get what I need for my Nomad.

Go to our own KawaNOW vendors section. I think dlarue has what you are looking for @ www.phcustoms.com. (http://www.phcustoms.com.)

We call them dresser bar chaps. Liz made them for our bikes out of Marine grade vinyl. She also made our highway bar chaps. Nice to have a wife that can sew.

The link appears to be dead.

**UPDATE** - Link appears to be okay, I tried it again and after a couple more tries, it worked.

Sorry about the screwup with the link. Didn't even think about it when I put a period behind the com. Use www.phcustoms.com (http://www.phcustoms.com) without my extra period and it will work.

cactusjack,

I think this is what your talkin about. You can call Ron Green Sports Center and they can tell you if it will fit your Nomad.
It's called RIVER ROADâ„¢ SADDLEBAG GUARD...

I guess that explains why I went to the vendor page and the link worked. It's been a long day and I didn't notice the error in the link you gave me. Thanks.

RE water bottle.
A water bottle lays down nicely between the handle bars and windshield and doesn't move when I ride. Just need to keep some water in it so it doesn't catch the wind and fly out. Best mod you can have. Free, no drilling, and reverts back to normal if you change your mind.
My tip for the day..Joe

The problem with those is that you are limited to having the water bottle that they built the chaps for... I don't know about you guys, but I need a bigger water bottle than the one those holders will hold... We have thought about extending the Rear Guard covers to have water bottle holders, but have yet to come up with an idea that we thought would work... Plus, we are afraid of the liability issues involved... What if the water bottle somehow comes out??

We would be willing to try to make these, (I would love to have them myself!) But need ideas... Throw some our way, and we will see what we can come up with...

The ones I saw yesterday looked like any standard 20 oz. water bottle would fit, and they look deep enough that a bottle wouldn't just fly out. I'd be more than happy to beta test a set for you if you made some up.

Dlaure & Cactusjack... I've got a little Mom&Pop motorcycle accessory store right down the road from where I live and they've got a couple of these in there too. They're a little different than the one that is pictured from River Road. The water bottle portion, if I remember correctly, is not a "pocket" per say... but it has leather straps weave like a base ball glove pocket. They're closed today, but if I get a chance to stop by there tomorrow, I'll try and get some pics to send you. I do remember that they're some heavy leather though.... not so much weight wise, but thick!! That would be my worry about fitting between the back guard and the saddlebag.... Either way...I'll see what I can find out and get some pix for y'all.

I can find what I'm looking for now, the only question is whether or not they will fit the guard on a Nomad.

I had one from Willie and Max and will NOT fit the Nomad. Sold it on Ebay. The problem is the length. I called about the River Road one and it is a universal fit but it looks very much like the Willie and Max one and the measurements are 6-1/2"W x 10"H x 4"D.

JussMatt,
Pics would be GREAT! It really helps that the 1600 and the 1500 Guards are the same, that way, we can build the pattern from our bike.

Kawgirl,
The link you sent is great... That gives me a lot of good ideas... I was thinking that it would be a good idea to have a strap to hold the water bottle in; Just to make SURE that the water bottle would never fly out. Thanks so much for the links everyone...

Why not try a loop that would fit over the neck of the bottle. Something like that is on a gun holster that loops over the hammer on the gun. Just my $00.02 -Rich

Good idea Redeye, now I can use my double holster rig, with a water pistol on one side. Just have to remember which is which. Getting confused here might present a problem..

You also don't want to overcomplicate the design to where you can't easily remove or replace the bottle while on the bike That's the whole purpose of this. I could carry gallons of water in my saddlebags, but I couldn't access it without getting off the bike. I don't think if the bottle holder is 5 or 6 inches deep, a restraining device is necessary to keep the bottle from flying out.

Ok Guys... I went by the store right down from me and unfortunately.... it's the same one that's listed above. The River Road...model# 10-893. Sooo...I guess I'm not remembering correctly. I will say this though...about the water bottle... It's IN THERE!! I can assure you that if it falls out... you were doing something WAY wrong and the water bottle will be the least of your worries. It's about 6 1/2" to 7" deep and it's a tight fit. As for fitting the Nomad... I have a '07 1600 and it will NOT fit. With the snaps closed, it's about 3" too long. I've got a buddy w/ a HD Road King and it would fit his fine, but there are definate differences between the SaddleBag Guards..both in Diameter and Length.

Dlarue...I hope this helps. Sorry it's not what I was thinking about w/ the straps instead of a sleeve. Let me know if you need anything else, since I'm good friends w/ the people at the store, I doubt they'll have any problems with me getting your some measurements or info if you need. Just let me know.... Later guys
