Hi all ... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
I've got an '08 Nomad 1600 and when I get a little "carried away" with what I put, or attempt to put, in my saddle bags, the door/gasket does not fit as it should. However, with the new Nomad 1700 bags, they have the cover on the top, therefore, in theory, should provide more weather protection. Has anyone yet tried, or perhaps already knows, whether the 1700 saddlebags will fit the 1600? ???
Thanks for your ear ...

I don't know, but that is an interesting request since most/many on here would rather have the 1600 bags.

Are you experiencing water getting in? The reason I ask is we just returned from a trip with a number of days traveling in rain and spray, and the doors did not seal against the gasket on the upper front leading edge due to over loading. We have inner bags for the saddle bags and so was not too concerned about water, but to my surprise there was never even a drop of water inside the saddle bag whenever I opened it. I was more concerned about permanently bending the door out of shape, but that does not seem to have happened in my case.

Uhhhhh, have you checked with the guys who actually own the 1700s? I'm pulling your leg, since nearly all the guys who own the older bags and have never used the new ones, seem to have a, uhhhhh, how shall I say, bad opinion about the new bags. ::)
But to be fair I had my eyes opened re-entering the States through Niagara Falls a few weeks back. Had a hard case Customs guy who asked me a slew of questions and then told me to open my bags for inspection. When I did, he said "oh hell, I prefer the old Nomads that dump their contents on the ground, you guys ain't no fun anymore, get outta' here."
Oh, and got caught in the rain, no leaks. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

My buddy has the same gravitational constant issues as well on his 1600. I went through a major downpour in a three hour thunderstorm a week ago last monday, 2nd gear, 30km/h on the shoulder of the road cause I couldnt see for all the water and it was only 2" deep on the road at that point, bags didnt have a drop in em. I and the wify however were super saturated..... lol, it was fun man.

Just dont cram too much stuff in the bags and the lids shut correctly. Mine have never leaked a drop. my brother rode 360 miles in a severe thunderstorm from Tx-OK and never had a leak on his '06.

Ive had mine packed pretty tight a couple times, and have never had a leak. They seem to seal rather well but I guess if you really stuff them full its possible for them to leak.

I've had mine stuffed so you could see that they are not sealed. I make sure not to do that on longer trips where getting stuff wet would be an issue. I suspect you can get more into the 1600's bags without the gap than possible in the 1700s, but that would be a test that would need to be checked out.

I really thought the Nomad has the best bags on the Market(had an Ultra) and I like the side opening. For long trips I just put in after market bags. I really looked at the new bags and I'm not impressed they look to be about 60/40. I'm sure they would be fine for the everyday stuff, but hard to beat the old design with after market bags for longer trips. Just pack and load and when you arrive, oren side bag remove am bag and take in hotel.

I also used mine to knock an Obama support out and it did the job with ease. No cracks or scratches either. :)

I had the opposite perception. I thought the side openiong bags would be very unhandy - but after buying an '07 Nomad 1600 along with the after market fitted bags, travelling is pretty simple. Looking in the 1700 bags the shape looks somewhat unhandy, and the top edge of the bag sill seems to leave some space in the bag difficult to use. Since I don't have a 1700 and have never used the bags, this perception could be as wrong as my previous perception regarding the 1600 side loading bags which I now love.

I've had a Nomad for 10 years, and have never had the bags leak. When I go on a trip, I usually have the liners so full, I have to kind of bounce them upwards, and push them in to get the lid to close. I remember reading a magazine test that said they leak if you stuff them too full. Must be like pinging, so do and some don't.

I looked over the 1700 that was at the Custer rally. I liked the idea of making the shock air valves easier to get too, but they used up a lot of bag space to make room to get to the valve. I didn't like that, plus I liked the looks of the old bags.

It's too bad that they didn't make a balancing air line so that you only needed to air up the shocks from one point, and make that accessible near a side cover or something so that they didn't lose the bag space for the valve.

Uh-oh...Mac said the dreaded "e-word". Embroidery.

Might I suggest using the synonyms "stitched" or "sewn" in the future, or we will seriously have to consider pulling your man card. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Let's try using them in a sentence: "BD was pressing his oxford shirt but had to be careful of his name stitched above his breast pocket." I think we can all agree that sounds much more manly. ::)

I'm trying to get BD's breast out of my mind.......why the hell was that brought up? http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I'm like Dan.....I've crammed everything including the kitchen sink into my bags.....no leaks, so far.

BD's breast is his money maker. I heard if there is a brass rod around he, in the words of Trace Atkins, is "workin that money maker" :)

I got stuck in a thunderstorm yesterday for about a good 30 minutes of hard down poor. My bags were packed to the brim, and the doors didn't want to shut when I loaded them. I am sure that my seals were not tight, but I didn't have a single drop of water in my bags (2008). I have seen the new top loading bags and don't really care for them, they look like eggs to me. I prefer the side loading bags because you can get "widder" items in them. I was on a trip with my father in law who has a new 2009 HD Ultra Classic (sucker!), and he asked me to put an 18pack of Labatts in my bags because his trunk was fulle and the beer wouldn't fit in his bags. Had no problem at all getting that 18 pack in mine!!!

At first I didn't think I would like the new 1700 bags. But after using them, I think I like them better. It seems I can fit more in them. I also like how you can leave them unlocked. The TRUNK is the cats ass. Love the way the bike handles and rides. Glad i made the trade with my 07 nomad.
