Just got through installing the Stebel horn that came in this afternoon. I'm new to this kind of stuff and thought about getting someone to help me. But I just went ahead and did it myself. It took about an hour, I took my time, wasn't in any hurry. And it sounds awesome. My stock horn was probably louder than any stock horn I've heard, personally. But I wanted to make someone drop their cell phone or pi** their pants for pulling out in front of me so I got the Stebel Nautilus. Some advice for some of you newer ones out there, though. I paid another $10 and got the Plug-n-Play Wiring Harness for the Stebel Nautilus and it was so simple anyone who knew much about it could probably install it in about 10 minutes. In the other kit you had to connect all the wires and probably had to buy something else to go with it. Jamie
Just don't test that sucker for the first time in the garage, and secure the cats and kids.

Jamie, Did you have to use the optional little jumper because your negative wire runs from the switch to the horn?. That's how mine was. A little confusing at first but it all worked out OK after I figured out the current path.

Too bad we don't have the room to mount a train horn on the bike, then people would sh*t themselves when that baby goes off. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Ells: Too late, in my garage, turned on the switch and it went off til I turned the key back off and scared the crap out of my wife, which leads me to
Mitch: Yes, I did have to use the little jumper so it wouldn't be continuous. Also had to plug into the other stock horn wire.
That, my friends, will get anyone's attention!!!!!

BT, The plug and play does include the relay. You have to have the relay to prevent frying your stock horn button or overloading the small wiring. The horn's power comes directly from the battery while the stock horn wiring and button only triggers the relay. The plug and play harness is worth the extra $20 IMHO.

Where did you buy the plug and play version. Time for me to get one.

Where do you purchase the Stebel horn and how much money are we talking? Sounds like it is what I need although my horn is fairly loud. You can never make too much noise.

You should go through a relay. A Stebel draws too much current for the stock horn wiring to handle.

There is not a plug n play model. You have to hard wire it in. I did hear a train horn mounted in a truck. This guy was driving by a bunch of girls and I was walking out of work to my bike. I was a good 50 yds away but the girls were about 20 ft away. I had my back to the truck and when that muther went off I about jumped out of my skin. The girls all screamed. it put the stebel to shame I must admit but I like my stebel for bikes.

My Stebel came with a relay in the package. Thanks to Bob (Yellowjacket) the wiring was easy.

seems cheap and easy enough.. do ya have to make any brackets or holders to mount the stebel to? I assume it goes close to the same place as stock?

Doc, There is a plug & play harness which includes the relay, all of the required wiring with connectors and inline fuse on the power wire. The harness is encased in shrink tubing and ready to go. Connect the hot line to the battery and run the harness under your tank. Connect one existing horn line to the jumper in the harness which runs to the relay and connect the hot and ground to the horn. All connecters are there and insulated. It's worth the $20 instead of wire shopping and having to measure and cut the wiring.

I did get that wiring kit ands free relay. Just didnt realize that made it a plug n play. it was a little harder than the plug n play TFI. Now thats what i call a plug n play unit. :-)

I'm surprised no one has asked yet. Where did you mount the compressor and, if different, the air horn itself?
I had a Stebel on the Classic. Mounted the compressor inside of the toe shifter and the air horn in the middle of the engine guard.
Since the Nomad doesn't have a crossover for the engine guard...
btw--even though the stock Nomad horn is louder than the meep-meep of the Classic, two cars pulled in front of me on Monday (one on the way to work and one on the way back), and reacted like they didn't know I had been there--and I gave them both a long shot.
Within the first week of the Classic's Stebel, I saw an SUV driver with closed windows and a cellphone to her ear JUMP when I tooted. She moved back over quickly.
Stebelize!

I got the whole thing (Stebel Nautilus compact air horn, chrome) through Amazon from BikerHiway. The Horn, Plug-n-Play kit and shipping for about $75. And the Plug-n-Play kit was $20 and well worth it, made it so simple. If you don't get it, you still have to buy several more wires, in-line 20 amp fuse and more. The horn came with just the horn and the relay and nothing else. The horn and compressor is one piece. I think me and Cajunrider got the same thing and he probably liked it, too. I just turned the stock horn bracket backwards and it worked fine. One day I'll take it off and straighten it a little so it won't stick out so far. But man that thing will get your attention. I think the only thing louder is a train horn. I still think my Nomad's stock horn is one of the more louder horns out there. Those Harley horns are a joke. Sound like a midget roadrunner.

I installed my compact Stebel Nautilus using the OEM horn bracket reversed... It was described herein but can't remember who suggested it.
I also purchased the wiring kit, but I ended up buying my own wires and connectors b/c I didn't like running 3 wires under the tank to the relay next to the battery. My relay is now behind the horn strapped to the frame.
Second best investment so far, next to the drivers backrest.

The Plug-n-Play wiring harness has the wires encased into one so it was easy to tuck under the tank and tie up.

I saw 1 stebel for around $40 +- a little, and another for around $140. What's the difference between these 2? One more plastic?

Eastern Beaver ( http://easternbeaver.com/Main/Products/Horn_Kits/horn_kits.html ) is another source for a relay kit. A little more expensive, but they use high quality parts which to me is worth it.

The Stebel Nautilus runs about $40 something for the black version somewhere in the $50s for the chrome (plastic) version. Never seen any for much more. $140 might be for a different model.

I used a piece of strapping, bent with 2 45 degree angles to mount the horn off the side of the radiator.

Black and Chrome are the same, $41 plus shipping at BikerHiway. And the $20 Plug-N-Play wiring harness is a good high-quality accessory. You don't have to pay a crap-load of money to get something nice. Horn and compressor are connected into one piece. Too many know-it-alls trying to run down a good product.

Ive had the chromed version installed now for about a year. Works real well. I saved an old dog yesterday with it. I was pulling out of my sub-division and noticed an real old poodle walking the same way fixing to enter a busy 4 lane road. it would have been a certain death for the dog. I toooted my stebel one quick blast and that dog never looked at me so fast. Then turned right around and went back into the sub-division. made me feel good to save a dog with a horn, I usually do with med's/surgery. :-)

I have the chrome version and for those who are wondering, the horn and compressor are connected and can be separated to hide the compressor, but it looks fine together and I'm leaving it alone. Already got the attention of a couple of cagers pulling out in front of me. Kinda like being able to toot horn without the key in ignition, too. Also, just fixed the bags where I don't have to have a key to unlock them. Followed instructions off Gadget's page and they work fine. And can lock them when I want to. Don't know what I'd do without this website and good advice?
