View Full Version : After Custer: looking at a rear trunk

After the trip with the leather travel pack, Deb and I have decided to install a hard trunk on the bike. I really liked Kris's Premeux trunk, and have come across Matazu trunks. Does anyone have any comments on the Matazu trunks because their prices look pretty cheap for all you get and that raises a red flag in my books.

I think CactusJack has one. I looked at them as well, people that have them typically say they are okay, for the price, but are not high quality, and a bit flimsy I have heard as well. They are also smaller than the Premeux, Scootworks or Harley ones as well. The others will fit two full face helmets.
You will still need a mount, using a cobra luggage rack will work, but is not the best mount for any amount of weight.
I went with the Harley Tour Pak, I like the spoiler and side marker lights so that made my choice for me. The Premeux was a close second though and it comes with a nice chrome rack.
BTW, how did the Mustang seat work out for the trip?

Yes, I have a Mutazu trunk. It has been okay, and it's worth the price I paid for it. I didn't buy it with longevity in mind. When buying a trunk there are a number of costs you have to consider. You need a rack to mount the trunk on, the trunk itself, and unless you buy one that matches (easy with a black nomad), you have the cost of having it painted. Add some lights, etc., and you're into it at least a grand. I went cheap on the trunk and figured if I got a year or two out of it, that would be okay.
I am about ready to pull the trigger on a new trunk, but only because I want a larger trunk.

Kevin, I like the older Venture trunk and the way it looks but I'd go bigger if/when I do it again. I might consider a newer Venture trunk .....they have a similar shape as the older ones but are quite a bit larger. And CJ is right about the cost. You'll be looking at about $900 - $1000. by the time the dust settles. I'll bet someone is going to suggest a Premeux. They're suppose to be very nice and they come painted to match. Something else to consider.

On another forum there was a guy with the Matazu trunk and got the Scootworks....the Matazu fits nicely inside the Scootworks (he even had pictures). If I remember right he had basically the same comments as CJ on it too.

What was it you didn't like about the leather travel pack and what kind was it. If you don't mind my asking?

Strobe: the Mustang seat worked out very well, the back rest was fantastic, not sure how I rode without one all these years. Still got a bit butt sore after a period of time, so much so, that when we were in Custer Deb and I picked up a sheep skin cover for the return trip and that worked out very well. Charlie ( Ballast ) had his "day long" seat arrive while we were there and was very happy with it during the week, so maybe that is the eventual was to go.
TC. Not sure of the brand, picked it up on ebay a while back. It was good quality, but seeing how others managed with the hard packs, and not having to re and re them when you stop at a hotel is very handy. Plus, like most of them they are designed to slip over the back support and ours started to rip the stitches out on one side when the pack started to get to full. For one person, I would say no problem with the leather pack, but two up riding, the hard trunk is the way to go. Plus, adding more lights is the bonus with the hard trunk.
Cactus Jack, how much for your used trunk? My bike is black also and have been thinking about a trunk.

Sorry, another member here has first dibs on it when the time comes. If he changes his mind, I'll offer it for sale in the "for sale" area.
I am not ready to sell it yet, I want to have another trunk to be able to bolt on when I take this one off.

If I ever go to a trunk, I'm gonna go with one like Vulcan E has/had on his bike. That looks real good. That is if I ever go to a trunk. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Hey Kevin.....As you know, I have the Mutazu trunk and I am fairly happy with it for the price I paid for it. Having said that, I had to spend around $300.00 to upgrade the wrap around back rest to full padded leather. It holds two helmets so it is roomy enough for me. It is a little noisy when going over bumps but not excessively so. The price is right but I will also probably go to a tour pack eventually but probably not from Premeux as they want arounf $1400.00 for their pak.
On a side note, we are loving Medicine Hat and can see ourselves here in 10 years. Great weather, great people, and gorgeous riding country. We are passing through Canmore on the way back to check on our Towpac kit and will get hold of you when we return.

Trunks are like backrests....once you have one, you'll wonder how you ever did without it... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif!
I have the Premeux Tour Pack and indeed it is spendy....but once out of the package it is a 20 minute bolt on and down the road you go. Factory matched paint and pin-stripe, luggage rack pre-installed, beautiful chrome mounting bracket and big wrap around upper and lower passenger backrest. For a user friendly, great looking and easily installed Tour Pack....you can't go wrong with the Premeux.
You will have to add your own additional lighting however. I just added an LED lightbar from Chromeglow...

Ridemslow, Thanks for the compliment. My trunk is an '02 HD Ultra Classic. Counting the trunk, backrest, all clear lenses with LEDs (even the side marker lights), I got about $600 in it. I didn't have to buy the paint, 'cause I had it already from when I reworked a '89 Venture trunk. Like all the others have said, once you have one, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

I have the inexpensive trunk and I mounted it with a metal supporting plate and fender washers for stability on a Wompus Rack. I bought it specifically for my wife's comfort and it is a help for the passenger. My only issue has been with the lock as it is built very cheaply.
My wife wanted her own bike this year so the reason for the trunk has gone out the window. When we got back from Custer, I took the trunk and rack off and put on the backrest. We both have T-Bags and will be able to haul more in a t-bag than in the trunk. I don't trust the rack on the cheaper trunk as it isn't that well built and I'm afraid to put much of a load on it.
That said, I really like the look of the Nomad with a Tourpak trunk.
