I had new Avon Cobras installed today. In case anyone is considering ordering any, the price from Dennis Kirk has dropped from what is listed in their current metric catalog. The current price is $152.99 for the front, and $186.99 for the rear. I called to have them beat the price of another web site, and the rep said that they already have them beat because of the price change. Dennis Kirk charges $5 shipping per tire, so the total was a few cents under $350.
I got 9700 miles out of the stock 'Stones, and the rear was really getting cupped badly. I could sure tell the difference riding my bike home the 50 miles from the shop today.
Take care.

PC, I now have over 5,400 miles on my AV-72 rear tire and can't see any noticeable wear as of yet. 95% of that mileage is pulling my trailer riding 2 up. I have 15,100 miles on the stock front tire and will install the new Cobra soon. I am well satisfied with the rear so far. Hope the front tire does just as well.

Am planning on getting some Cobras later this summer, please post your opinion of them after you put some miles on.
And thanks for the pricing update.

Heard good things about the Avon Cobras but I ended up going with the Dunlop Elite III on front and Metzler 880 on rear.
Hope they serve you well.

DaBull,

How are they superior the the stock stones?

I only have the rear mounted at this time. I did notice right away that the bike seems more nimble and quicker in turns than it did with my stock Bridgestones. It may be a premature judgement but it appears that I will get more miles on the rear Cobra than I did with the stone looking at the current slight wear with over 5,000 miles pulling the trailer and 2 up.

terre,

Thanks. I am debating between going DS or with Avons when the time comes. I only have 3100 on my bike now so I have a bit, but will be putting on another 2500-3000 in August when I ride from OK to OH for my sister's wedding.

In my case, I really didn't mind the stock tires, until I had to replace the rear one at 5300 miles.

I had Avon Cobras put on front and rear.

I've got about 1400 miles on them now and still am amazed at the difference.

My road into town has a bunch of curves on it. With the stock tires, I'd have to slow down or muscle the bike into countersteering to get thru the turns. With the Cobras, I sail right thru with little or no effort. It's unreal how much easier they are to ride thru turns.

They also just feel like they are holding the road better. Had to ride thru some rain and they felt really stable there, too.

Call me a Cobra fan!

Cobra fan here too. No more puckering on the road snakes compared to the Bridgestones.
Rode 2 up in a downpour with no issues also.

Hope you enjoy yours PC as much as I have mine. Got 1,500 miles on both and they are sweet. Got them ordered by a place in Austin for $337 and $18 an axle to install. :-)

I also installed new tires today but I went with Metzeler ME880 front and back. I have had Metzeler's on my other bike formany years and have been quite happy with them. My original "Stones" had 10,500 miles on them with some tread to go but with some longer trips planned I decided to change them out now. DJ

The Avon Cobras are a great tire in regards to how they handle. I have talked to several dealers and some manufacturer reps. Its simple the best handling tires usually have the shortest life. The softer the compound the better it grips. I ride double up and ride about 9000 miles a year. I got about 7000 miles out of my first set before I replaced them. The back tire was showing wear. I might have been able to make another 1000 or so but did not feel safe pushing it since I was leaving on a 2600 mile trip. I tried switching to Dunlop and believe me I am not happy compared to the Avon Tires. They just do not handle as well. I really wished I had my Avon's back when I was hitting those turns. The Avon's may not give the best life but they do give the best performance. If you are a rider that does not push through the turns and just goes from point A to B with no frills, then other tires are ok. If you like to push through the turns and have fun then the Avon's are for you. Just thought I would give you my thoughts on the Avon tires. Safe riding.
