Mike is okay. He has a broken ankle. We were headed east on Hwy 52 just outside of Portsmouth, OH. He was going about 55 and traveling behind me. Todd and I both noticed at the same time that we didn't see his headlight anymore. Stopped, waited and saw a few cars go by but not Mike. Headed back west and sure enough, cars pulled over and a deer laying in the road. Mike was on the side of the road, in good spirits. He bike went ahead of him, caught and sign and flipped a few times before it stopped at the bottom of the shoulder. It was towed into Portsmouth. He's been discharged and should be headed here to the hotel anytime. Will get a rental car to drive back to NC. Thank God he's okay!!

I'm glad he's going to be okay. Just curious, was it dark?
Just got to the hotel in Portsmouth Ohio. We were able to find rooms locally and Mike just called from the hospital to say he is on his way over via cab. His ankle is broken, some minor road rash on his right arm, a few bruises, but otherwise Mike is physically OK. We had stopped by the hosptal and he was waiting for the xray results, so we went to find rooms.
The plan is that he is going to try to rent a car in the morning and drive home. The bike is here and his insurance co. will inspect here in Ohiio. I am going to try to go back to the sceen first thing in the morning and see if there is any other stuff that we missed picking up in the dark.
Hind site, I wish we had not decided to ride at night......we were about 45 minutes from our planned stop when the accident happened. We decided to stop and eat about 2 hrs out and had been going down hwy52 for about an hour between 50 and 55mph ..... there was a pick up behind us. All of a sudden, Mike and the pickup was gone so we turned around and went back pretty quick. The guy in the pickup had already called for help and said the deer jumped out right in front of Mike. We were just happy Mike seemed to be OK other than his ankle...the bike and/or parts can be replaced.
More in the morning, but Mike is in good spirits right now and said if he could ride it, he would get right back on and head home tomorrow.
Those that met him this last week in Custer know he is a great individual with spirit second to none.

Mike, I sure was hoping we all got back without mishap. After meeting you I knew you were one of the good guys! Hitting a deer has got to be an terrifying event.
If there is a bright side after the insurance is settled, there are 1700 Voyager waiting?
I always try to think of the bright side of lousy situations! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Speedy recovery... as much as we talk about and love our bikes, the reality is they are easily replaced. Wish there was something I could do to help get the bike back home.
Take care and good luck!

WOW !! I hope you recover quickly. Real happy to hear your spirit wasn't damaged.
Having been hit by a deer myself a few years back, I'm feeling your pain. Someone said you/he had another issue some time ago with a deer.... is that so? After my mishap I thought "what are the chances that'll ever happen again". I thought it was over, but have always been diligent keeping an eye out for the buggers. I guess it could happen again.
Again....Get well soon ! and enjoy your new bike.

Am glad to hear you are mostly ok Mike.
On the way to Custer I watched a deer charge the road and do a 180 barely 15 feet from Netnorske and his wife, and that was in the middle of the day.
Speeky recovery.
Glad to hear you weren't hurt worse Mike. Prayers for swift and complete recovery.

What is the best way to mount a deer rifle on a Nomad? ???

Deer rifle???? How about a gatlin gun. ::) That way you have to worry about a greasy spot in the road instead of the whole body.

Shot gun perhaps? That way your backseat could "plow the road" for you. It would give them something to do.
