DAY 1:

I plan to update this thread daily this is day 1.

I rode 460 miles today, from my home in Chandler to Beaver UT. BD beat me there by about 30 minutes. He was on I-15 with a 75 MPH limit, I was on Hwy 89 with a max of 65 and about a half dozen small towns along the way. Weather started out nice and sunny, but cool on the way up to Flagstaff, fought a stiff headwind for a hundred miles or so. It was raining in Utah, on and off for 100 miles. 5 minutes after I got the motel, it started to hail.

I'm interested to see what others who tow trailers are getting for MPG. I am averaging 30 MPG, but I had to climb to 7000 (Flagstaff) then down to the Colorado River at 3400' (Lake Powell) then back to 6000' near Bryce Canyon.

We picked up a straggler, he contacted BD a couple of days ago and wanted to join us. He isn't a member yet, but he will be. His name is Tom and is a nice guy. He met up with us in Utah. He had the privilege of riding through the hail.

We're getting an early start tomorrow for a 500+ mile day 2. We lost an hour due to time zone change., so it will be extra early for us.

Here's a picture of my rig at a fuel stop in Flagstaff. It's not that clean and shiny anymore:

This was taken at lunch in Page, AZ. That's Lake Powell in the distance:

He met Brad and he would want to join? According to some people we know, Brad's the brother of Lucifer.

DAY 2:

BD, Tom and I left Beaver UT at 6:30 AM on the 14th. It was cold and damp. After going north on I-15 for 16 miles, we turned onto I-70 E towards Denver. Climbing up 6000 and 7000 foot summits, it was very cold and there was fog in the lower valleys. As we rode closer to Green River UT, it grew warmer and the clouds dissipated some. We stopped to eat lunch in Grand Junction CO " the gateway to the Rocky Mountains". As we prepared to leave, the sky looked very dark and gloomy to the east. We decided rain was imminent, so we suited up in our rain gear before we left.

If you have never ridden or driven I-70 through the Rockies, try to do it at least once in your lifetime. It is an amazing ride, culminating in crossing the Continental Divide at over 11,000 feet. There are 5 tunnels through the mountains, and Glenwood Gorge is something to see.

We caught just a few drops of rain near Glenwood Springs, but we chased a nasty storm for 250 miles - all the way from Grand Junction to Denver. The highway was wet, it had been raining, but was just one step ahead of us the whole way. When we entered the Denver area, we saw accumulations of what looked like snow along the shoulder. It was hail. Denver had been hit by a massive thunderstorm just before we got there and 2 funnel clouds were spotted in the area.

In all, it was a 555 mile day. That's a real "butt burner".

When we arrived at our hotel, we were greeted by the Texas/Louisiana folks and we all went to dinner together.

Here's pics from the day:

DAY 3:

Today we left our hotel around 7:45 AM and had a 14 mile ride north on I-25 to meet up with the Colorado crew. Audiogooroo, Dan Lund, and Ells were waiting for us at the truck stop we decided to meet at. We left and headed for the Wyoming state line on I-25. Wow, what a ride! Easy miles along the rolling hills at the edge of the Great Plains. The weather was very nice, a little cloudy but nice. We were supposed to stop in Wheatland, WY for gas and to meet up with Landman, who has the distinction of being the only KawaNOW member in Wyoming. But Wheatland was 143 miles from Erie, where we met and filled up and some of us pulling trailers couldn't quite make it. We had to bail out and fill up in Chugwater WY (I don't make this stuff up, folks).

In Wheatland we gathered again and Landman explained his plan of attack to get us to Custer. We took secondary roads through the gently rolling grassy hills. Lots of twisties and small hills. Take it from someone who knows - you have to pay attention on this road. I was distracted for just a second and took a turn too fast and too wide and damn near ate dirt. Fortunately, my superior handling of my sophisticated Nomad "dominator" saved my bacon. http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

We stopped in Lusk, WY and enjoyed lunch at Subway before hitting the road again and aimed straight for the South Dakota state line. Not surprisingly, western SD looks just like eastern WY. As we got closer to Custer, the terrain changed from rolling hills and grass to mountains and granite rock formations.

We all congregated at the Bavarian Inn for a meet 'n greet. Seeing 40-50 Nomads in one parking lot is an impressive vision to behold.

We rode about 320 miles today. so far this was the easiest day I've had.

See below for a few pics of the day.

I have met Netnorske and Ballast. Not sure who else was coming from there. Big John, maybe? I haven't met him yet, but if he's here I will make it a point to do so.

Ballast got his new Daylong seat delivered today at his motel. He hadn't even ridden on it yet when he showed it to me.

DAY 4:

Today was a choice of a ride to Devil's Tower or to the Badlands. I chose the Devil's Tower ride and will do the Badlands on Thursday. We all assembled at the Bavarian Inn and split into two ride groups. We departed around 08:30 with 38 bikes in our group. We started out by heading west from Custer. Our first fuel stop was Sundance, WY which is about 27 miles from Devil's Tower. As we pulled out of the gas station, it started pouring and we got soaked for probably the first 5 miles. It rained on and off for most of the day in the area we were in. Devil's Tower was awesome, a most impressive sight. We stayed there about an hour and then rode to Hulett WY for lunch.

After lunch, we rode to Belle Fourche SD for gas, then through the city of Spearfish and then through Spearfish Canyon. Seeing 38 Nomads snaking through the twisties is something to see. Lots and lots of bikers all through the area. The roads are some of the best I have ever ridden, and this is some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. It's very green and the air is clean. A huge contrast from where I live and ride.

Tomorrow morning is "free time" and many of us are going to Sturgis. In the afternoon I am tailgunner on a ride to Mt. Rushmore that Trip is leading.

Here are some of the pictures of the day:

This was during a rest stop along the way:
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc218/slhanks4/Custer%20Trip%20Day%204/P1000124_RSZ_008.jpg

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc218/slhanks4/Custer%20Trip%20Day%204/IMG_1591_RSZ_002.jpg

Here's one from the parking area. I don't have any real close-up pictures because after I walked up to the base, the batteries in my camera died. I didn't have any spares, so I walked back down to the bike and took some with my small camera.

DAY 5:

This morning was free time, so I hopped on the Nomad and rode to Sturgis. It's about 70 miles to Sturgis from Custer and let me tell you, it is a nice ride. It's about 40 miles to Rapid City, and the road is absolutely great, hills and lots of curves on roads in excellent condition. Well, for my money it just doesn't get much better than that. At Rapid City, I jumped on I-90 and rode the 25 miles to Sturgis in high-speed style. I blew some coin in Sturgis on shirts and gifts for people back home. Sturgis looks like a nice place when it isn't overrun with 400,000 bikers.

I took the same route back and stopped in Rapid City for gas, and then visited the HD shop in Hill City to pick up my obligatory HD shirt.

This afternoon we rode to Mt Rushmore and through Custer State Park, other than a pretty good dousing of rain for the last 10 miles or so, it was great. Mt Rushmore is more impressive in person than I imagined.

Today's mileage tally was less than 200.

Here's some highlights of the day:

Mount Rushmore looks really neat, I'll have to see it for myself one day. I noticed gas is only $2.69 a gallon. Its been rising like mad here this week, as of last night its $1.04 a litre, or about $4.00 a US gallon. Its been $19.00 a fillup for me on the last couple tanks.

Gas is $.40-$.50 cheaper per gallon up here than back home in AZ. I paid $2.21 in Wheatland, Wyoming though. That was nearly a buck cheaper.

DAY 6:

Not much to report today. Most everybody went on either the Badlands or the Devil's Tower rides. I decided to do my own thing and rode into Rapid City to get a new battery put in my watch. What can I say...I'm lost without it.

Rapid City is about 40 miles from Custer and it is an absolutely gorgeous ride - usually. The ride there was okay, I was in the jewelry store for maybe 10-15 minutes and when I came out the sky had turned black and could hear thunder. I decided to ride east on I-90 to Wall Drug, but before I could get to I-90 it started raining. I pulled into a city park and donned my rain gear. I made it to I-90 and it was pouring rain. I thought I could outrun the storm, but the storm was moving east, just like me. I made it about 5 miles and turned around and went back to RC and hung out in a Flying J truck stop for about 30 minutes hoping the storm would pass. It didn't, so I filled the tank and headed back to Custer.

I got dumped on for about 20 miles and then it turned to hail. I made it to Hill City, where it was dry. I stopped to buy a t-shirt for someone and then hauled butt back to my motel. I killed a couple of hours researching my route home and then I went to meet Trip and the other staff members before we left for the big meal at the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park. Custer State Park is really cool, lots of twisties and everything is green. That's a real treat when you live where everything is shades of brown and tan.

After the meal and the group photos, Dan Lund came over and asked if I wanted to run the Needles Highway. I jumped at the chance and even though it was dusk, had a blast riding the 14 miles of twisties and hills. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Needles_Highway (http://NeedlesHighway)

Here's some photos from today:

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc218/slhanks4/Custer%20Trip%20Day%206/P1000245_RSZ_022.jpg

I have a big day tomorrow. Custer to Green River, WY - about 460 miles. I'll take pictures, weather permitting.

One more thing: I just want to say this was a first-class experience. Trip throws one hell of a get-together. The KawaNOW folks are some of the finest people I've had the privilege to know. I can't tell you how nice it is to meet the people that you have been bantering back and forth with for so long. The location was excellent (the weather could have been more cooperative, but what are you going to do...), the rides were meticulously planned and although there was one riding mishap, it was fairly minor and nobody was seriously hurt. If everyone gets home safe, you couldn't ask for a better outcome.

CJ, I agree "this was a first-class experience." The KawaNOW folks that came to this rally were fantastic. Definitely looking forward to the next one in a couple of years. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

DAY 7:

BD and I left Custer at 07:00 this morning and stopped for the night in Green River, WY. I didn't take any pictures today, so none will be posted. The last 120 miles of today's ride were from Rawlins to Green River on I-80. I-80 must be the most beat up interstate in the country. Add a 35 MPH headwind and it was a real treat.

I apologize if I didn't get to say goodbye to some of you before I left, or to those of you who may have left early. I sincerely enjoyed meeting everyone at the rally. The Custer trip is something I will never forget. I hope everyone arrives safely at their destination, and I hope to see you all again sometime in the future.

DAY 8:

Brad and I left Green River, WY this morning and headed west on I-80. The skies to the west were cloudy and dark. Surprisingly, we made it to within about 10 miles of the Salt Lake Valley before the rain started to hit us. We exited the freeway and suited up under an overpass. I purposely routed us onto I-215 as soon as we left Parley's Canyon so we could avoid the heavy traffic on I-15 in the urban area. We hopped onto I-15 where it meets I-215. We continued south on I-15 and pulled into Payson for gas. We were both hungry, so we went another 30 miles to Nephi where we ate lunch at a great cafe. If you're ever in Nephi Utah, eat at Lisa's Country Kitchen on the south end of town. It's a nice place and the food is good.

In addition to the rain, we fought heavy head and crosswinds all the way down I-15 past Cedar City. That's nearly 300 miles. I averaged 24 MPG today pulling my trailer while fighting the wind.

I didn't take many pictures today due to the weather, but here's a couple.

This was actually taken yesterday. We stopped at a rest stop on I-80 between Rawlins and Rock Springs WY. When we pulled in, the ground was moving - tons of prairie dogs were putting on a good show.

DAY 9: (final installment)

The last leg of my Custer trip proved to be very interesting. Having spent the night in Hurricane Utah, my first 200 miles of the day was going to be through parts of Utah and Arizona I had never seen before.

I started out by going east on highway 59, which took me right through the polygamist communities of Hildale, UT and Colorado City, AZ. At 5:30 AM, they appeared just like any other small towns. After about 30 more miles, I started gaining altitude as I approached Jacob Lake AZ. Jacob Lake sits high in the mountains at 7925 feet. It was windy and very cold when I stopped for gas. Continuing on, the highway took me back down to about 3200 feet. On my left were some massive sandstone cliffs I rode alongside of for 30-40 miles through some small towns (wide spots in the road, really). After stopping to photograph the Vermillion Cliffs, I crossed the Colorado River via Navajo Bridge at Marble Canyon. Between Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon, the bridge was nearly 500 feet above the river.

I drove maybe 20 miles more and turned onto highway 89, which took me through the Navajo Nation and on to Flagstaff. Flagstaff sits at over 7000 feet and was cool and windy. As I headed down I-17 toward Phoenix, I could feel the temperature rising as I dropped to 4000 feet. I pulled into a rest area and switched my leather jacket for my mesh jacket. The closer I go to Phoenix, the hotter it got. The last 120 miles were uncomfortably hot. It was only 103 degrees in the Valley, but I guess a week of cooler weather made me soft.

Anyway, I rode 469.1 miles to home today. Here's some highlights of the day:

Taken outside Colorado City at sunrise:

Let me just say as CJ's traveling companion for over 2K miles, I've not had the privilege of riding with such an even tempered, easy to get along with individual.

I've enjoyed being chided for low miles on my Nomad but as some I've spoken with, I have well over 250K of highway motorcycle miles from over 30 years of riding. I've taken many trips up and down the Pacific Coast with a variety of friends.

I can't remember enjoying anyone's company as much as Scott's. We, Tom and I, let Scott lead because he was towing all his belongings in his trailer! I figured a slow pace might be in store and that was just fine with me.

Oh no! Not Scott! My speedometer needle was always on 75MPH most of the way and that's with an accurate speedometer! Him and I seemed to know when the other had had enough of riding and needed a stop! I would say at the next rest stop how glad I was he pulled over and he would say the same to me whenever I led. Just good harmony among us.

The ride home was really tough as he outlined it. I took off from Hurricane on I 15 on the last day alone and had 85 MPH smooth sailing until I got to Mesquite. Then it was back to 20 MPH headwinds all the way to San Bernardino! We both had headwinds and rain the entire final 700 miles of riding. I got home and slept for 4 hours. Nothing like a Flexeril and a cold beer for throbbing shoulder and back muscles!

Thanks CJ !!! Your one heck of a good rider and easy going Character. Great laughter, good beer and food. I look forward to riding with you again! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Thank you everone! This was a "Bucket List" dream come true!

Cactus, I read more blogs than I have commented on. I kept up with yours and it was fun seeing where you went and what it was like.

I suppose you now need a vacation, to get over your vacation huh?

Would that be work, Dan? I have to go back to the office tomorrow. Today I am cleaning 3500 miles of road grime off my bike and giving her fresh oil and a filter. Her reward for a job well done.

I fixed my lighting problems. The switched 12v connection to my front fuse block wasn't tight, which is why my driving lights and cruise control were acting up. I also found the wire to my right front LED (in place of the amber reflector near the caliper) had come loose, and that has been fixed as well.

Thanks for the kind words, BD. I have ridden with lots of people who are high-maintenance and nothing but one issue after another. You weren't one of them. A long trip like this is both stressful and tiring and I can't say enough for having a riding partner that is both responsible and experienced. Thanks for sharing the road with me.

Scott,
I have really enjoyed your photo documented "play by play" acct. of the your travels. Very well done.
I want to say that it was a real pleasure finally meeting you. Meeting all the people in Custer, was great. I only wish there was more time that allowed for breaking bread and drinking beer with you and a select few. The next rally for sure.

CJ,
Excellent report and photos. I kinda wanted to wait until you were home so I could read the whole thread. It was great experience for all of us (Brent, Mike and Vic notwithstanding). Can't wait to do it all again!

Thanks for the positive comments, folks. Well, except for yours, Darlene! ::) http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I figured we'd all have 100 photos of Devil's Tower, Rushmore, etc. I wanted to post a few pics from my travels. I'm not as prolific a shutterbug as Dan, I haven't quite mastered the skill of taking pictures while riding yet.

The little $120 Panasonic Lumix camera I bought to carry in my pocket takes as good or better pictures than the $350 Canon I kept in the saddlebag most of the time.

Thanks CJ...even though we were there it was fun to relive the Rally through your pics.
Hope you enjoy the Scootworks trunk.
It was great visiting with you.
