View Full Version : What makes you happy?

There has been enough political talk of late, partly my fault. Thought it would be fun just to say what makes us happy. I'll start; My family, riding my Nomad, tying flies and fly fishing, spending time here ( I'll never admit that again ), quiet time in the morning before the rest of the world wakes up.
Going anywhere or doing anything where I can enjoy some peace and quiet. Sometimes involves my nomad, usually involves a lack of other human beings.

Drinking a big cup of java in the morning then taking a huge crap before I go to work. I'm giddy!
Sittin' in my back yard by the fire pit with a cigar and my thoughts. Dreaming of what lies ahead with my Nomad. More bling? performance? Car tire? endless thoughts of what I'd do to make it my personal friend.

Cindy! After her, not in any paticular order. My sons and grandchildren. Making the grandchildren laugh. Not having to get up in the morning to go to work for the first time in 44 years http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif Riding the Nomad. Family get togethers. Memories of my Mom and Dad. Being healthy. I lead a pretty simple stress free life. Lots of things people take for granted make me happy.

Spending time with family and freinds, going on a long ride either with some buddy's or alone, and being away from phones and people who think right away isn't good enough.

Time with my family hands down! Time at my place in the mountains in summer and fall. Riding the NAD, and making modifications to really make it mine.
Mostly just time at home and not somewhere across the country in some venue, hotel or airport.
Somewhat in order, at least for the starters: Time spent with wife and friends, riding the Nomad in the Mts, riding the Nomad to new places, time under the stars, long days in my woodworking shop, canoing, camping, and hiking, satisfaction from any job well done, riding the Nomad about anywhere, being outdoors in nature in general, this forum has worked its way somewhere onto this list, and sitting in the backyard hot tub at 106F especially at the end of one of those colder rides (the setting is pretty good too.)

Crawling into bed with my wife after work, then bringing her coffee in bed every morning (as I've done everyday since even before we were married); coming home to a full house (wife, step-daughter and me); firing up the Nomad and having a destination...or not; getting my family things they want/deserve; laughter.
My eyes open in the morning.......I'm happy. And all the things others have said, family, friends, riding, and work. I love my job.

My wife, kids and critters, piddling on the bike or some other project, riding, making the perfect shot, walking away from a project knowing it's done right, and ummmm- silicone, I'm a big fan, or better still, I'm a fan of big.... ;)

If I had to narrow it down the one thing, it would be sunshine. I love a sunny day any time of year, I particularly love summer sunny days where you can feel the warmth on your skin.
I can handle any amount of stress, as long as its sunny.
Going for a solitary ride in a remote and beautiful place also makes me very happy.
Early Sunday mornings when everybody is still in bed. Being on back roads without traffic. At night in my portable shelter on a frozen lake with my lantern and electronics catching crappies. To me there is no world outside of my shelter at that time. You southern folks and maybe some from the north might think I'm crazy.

I enjoy the days I get my kids, I enjoy riding new roads trying to get lost. I enjoy work (I build custom furniture, very relaxing), I enjoy hanging with close friends

I enjoy getting some solitude when I can, laughing with my boys, spending time with the wife, and sitting in my office wondering what I can do to my bike and where I'd be if I weren't stuck behind the desk dealing with problem kids all day.

Take my wife and kids back to my home town on the Eastern Shore in Crumpton, Maryland (pop. 400). My Dad still lives in the house I grew up in which is right on the Chester River. We relax, fish, crab, the kids play in the rain, Visit with family, shoot trap & sporting clays. No shops, traffic, or hassles. I hate to leave!

Little campground near Drumhellor, Alberta, Canada. Just me / my Nomad c/w tent trailer parked beside the River! No wifie / no Cell Phone service and the Road closes @ 10:45 P.M. when the Ferry closes!
Ah, go now - damn snow on ground!!!

hmmm...
Chantilly lace and a pretty face
And a pony tail hanging down
That wiggle in the walk and giggle in the talk
Makes the world go round
There ain't nothing in the world like a big eyed girl
That makes me act so funny, make me spend my money
Make me feel real loose like a long necked goose
Like a girl, oh baby that's what I like

Hey BD......I understand where you're coming from!!!
I enjoy time with the wife...time alone...riding my bike....teaching in the summer...We are summer type folks and love the warmth and sunshine. Don't enjoy winters any longer.
Grandkids are fun.
It hit me a couple of years ago(and after my accident) that I'm closer to my lifes end and I better not waste a bunch of time and energy on BS!!
time is way to short.

Pretty much what BD said but also grilling up some fat burgers, chicken or steaks while enjoying that cigar and watching my dogs run around in the back yard. Spending time with my wife watching football on Saturday and Sunday or being out enjoying a beautiful day.

Same here substituting hubby for wife. Some of our best bike trips have been when took tents and camped out...sitting around toasting marshmallows telling jokes. Also our fiest dog he is so lovable, so well behaved and he makes me laugh a lot.

what make me happy; sausage, a dry summer day in which to ride my bike, spending 10 minutes on a snowy wind-blasted hill-top from which I can see Killington Mountain with a wind-chill of about -10 delivering heating oil and then climbing back into the cab of my delivery truck that has the heater set at full tilt, driving five miles down a nasty bumpy dirt road to deliver heating oil and having to stop because wild turkeys are crossing, or white-tail deer are in the road, coming home after a particularly difficult day at work and finding the latest issue of BikerWorld, Motorcycle Cruiser or Robb Report Motorcycling in my mail box, seeing Pamela Anderson's pic in Nico's sig box, but most of all coffee in the morning; somehow it tastes better though when I don't have to go to work.

Short, and to the point, I love it! lol!
I'm a pretty happy camper. Enjoy most anything outside. Messing around with boats, gunkholing in a kayak or rowing dinghy, sailing the NC costal waters, pretending to fish and high on the list is motorcycle camping. I'll choose a private campsite anyday (well, most anyday) on the Blue Ridge Parkway or Smokies ,versus a noisy motel. Pitch a tent then throw a fly line in the water, cigar at sunset and that first cup of coffee in the morning. Pack up the bike and do it all over again.
I'm blessed with a great bride and three daughters whom I truly enjoy . My tree hugger daughter & I have backpacked from New Zealand to Patagonia spending a month at a time on the trail. Life is just too good!!

Lots of good replies, Shep I really like yours, but the most important for me waking in the morning and swinging my feet over the side of the bed and onto the floor, then running to the bathroom to take that first morning pee. ;)

I think people either decide to be happy or unhappy. It is a state of mind, some might say delusion or illusion, but definitely a choice.
There has been enough political talk of late, partly my fault. Thought it would be fun just to say what makes us happy. Well, I read everybody's thoughts on what makes them happy and although mine touch just about everybody's.....I have to say that Dan's touched me the most........
Like Dan Lund..........I'm most happy when it sunshines and that sunshine keeps me warm.......and taking trips on the NAD.

I really love all kinds of weather...which is one of the reasons I live where I do, but yeah, there's nothing like a warm, sunny, summer day. Especially when riding.
