View Full Version : Eastern Region Rally

01-20-2008, 08:03 PM
This is a twofold request.

First- Headcount for the rally. So far I have:

Kawgirl
Unwind2 + hubby
Todd
davidJones1
Towering
Geoffrey
dui546
callman + wife

These are the ones I can recall off the top of my head. Please post if you are coming to the rally so we have a headcount and I will know if I need to call the hotel for more rooms.

Secondly, what kind of rides are you interested in? Scenic, historic, tour, all day, half day, etc. Here is an example of the area riding. http://www.motorcycleroads.com/routes/SouthEast/WV/WV_2.shtml
Another is a ride to the Cass RR area and take a ride on the train then cruise back to the hotel. http://www.cassrailroad.com/

The Cass RR sounds like a great idea. We know people who have done that tour and spoke very highly of it. It would be a good time.

Scenic, historic, tour....they all sound great. Keep in mind, some of us are going to have nice long ride in getting there. BUT...its all good.

Simply put, I am totally looking forward to the rally get-a-way (or run-a-way) weekend. My vacation is already in and approved.

Kawgirl...I am sorry I have not gotten back with you yet....I will do some more research tommorrow and let you know what I find out too.

I like the idea 1/2 to 3/4 day rides.

A passenger seat is required for a passenger? Communist state.

I guess some states are more stringent than others. The nerve of them!

My wife is attending with me and we will be riding in from the Virginia Beach area. We will both be on my Nomad so that passenger seat will be required...right Todd? http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif Just kiddin...thanks for the look at the law in WV. I thought they were pretty much parallel to ours in Virginia.

Our primary route looks like 64 West to North 81 to 33 West. Mapquest has it listed as taking 5 hours and 45 min and a total distance of approx 340 miles. I figure we will make the journey in 8 hours taking some breaks and having lunch. It is pretty much a straight north-west route. I'd be happy to meet up with anyone along the way. There is definitely something to be said about safety in numbers.

I am working on motivating a couple of Nomad riders from this area.

Todd
01-21-2008, 09:01 AM
My wife plans to come to Dui.....so I guess I had better keep my passenger seat on too LOL. I thought the only one that really could possibly matter would be the headphone thing. That was from a West Virginia Riders site.

Mapquest has it interstate from here too at about 5.5 hrs....BUT...I am thinking that I am taking the smaller roads up...which it puts at about 6.5 hrs.

I was checking out the elevation of the area on google maps. The scenic riding will be really kewl. I think I will also be taking the smaller roadways. I will probably catch route 10 at Smithfield and take it to Richmond (parallel to 64). Will then take 295 around Richmond to route 33. Route 33 looks good (running through several small towns) all the way from Richmond to Elkins. Getting there and back will be part of the fun.

It is going to be over 800 miles for me if we decide to come. I'm thinking at least 2 days both ways. Does that qualify for Iron Butt status?

dui546
01-22-2008, 05:20 PM
I am looking at adding a good portion over 1000+ miles in the saddle on the rally weekend. I've ridden 450 miles each way to Pennsylvania (Virginia Beach to north of Pittsburgh) and back in a 3 day period. I did approximately 980 total miles with the middle day being a rest day. It was my first big trip on my Nomad and I totally loved it. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif I also learned what extras I was needing.

I did not have highway pegs at the time and I wish I had them. They are installed now. I also added the luggage rack. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif I am definitely looking at installing the "break-a-way" cruise control for this trip and possibly a pair of auxiliary head lights. Other than a stand up luggage bag for the rear luggage rack, I think I have everything covered.

I am also planning on taking my wife on several early spring rides at a couple of hundred miles each trip to get her prepared for the journey. We are essentiallly a NC border city and enjoy taking rides toward the Outer Banks, Elizabeth City and surounding county areas. Maybe we can meet up and have lunch with some of the NC KawaNow members.

Maybe we can meet up and have lunch with some of the NC KawaNow members.

coacha
01-22-2008, 10:17 PM
I've done 165 miles is the longest round trip I've had so far. Of course, I've only had it since the middle of November.

I already have highway pegs on it. I'm looking at adding a tour pack or a luggage rack with a bag; cruise control of some kind, extra lighting is definitely going on soon.

Hello Kawgirl, I just found out about the group and the rally yesterday at my local dealer. Me and my wife would love to come. Probably Late Thursday through Late sunday. I have only had my 2005 Nomad since September 7, last year but i managed to ride through the mountains around Elkins two weeks after the purchase.

01-25-2008, 05:23 PM

I find it interesting that a lot of us are pretty close to the same stage of life...our 25th anniversary is going to be in October. I have two daughters that are 23 and 21 and a grandson who is 3. My Nomad (as it seems for quite a few of you also) was "my gift to me."

My wife and I are taking a cruise out of Tampa and going to visit my Uncle in Tampa/St Pete area on Feb 8th and 9th. Our cruise departs the 10th and runs through the 17th. I checked the map and that is pretty close to Crystal River.

I hear ya man.
Been quite a boys club for Tracy around here for a long time.
But once they hit their teens and on up, they take pretty good care of momma. I don't think she'd want it any other way.

Besides, if I would have had a daughter, once she started dating (I think around the age of 30!) I'd wind up in prison!

Hi Everyone
Great choice to have the rally in Elkins. I rode down there a couple years ago and I enjoyed riding those roads more than anywhere else. And there is a lot to see everywhere you go.
I hope I will be able to make it, should be able to know in a few weeks.Anyone that has the time should stop and see the bridge
at the New River Gorge its right on St Rt 19 I think its Fayettville.
I have a few pictures posted at:

I am not sure if I did it right let me know if you could see them?

The title of the article in Rider is 'West Virginia is for Riders - Falling in Love with a lot of Great Roads'.

Late again on the tread (out of state for couple days) 6 kids 46, 45, 41, 38, 35, 27; 16 grand kids; 7 great grand kids. Nomad is my getaway, keeps me feeling young. The four oldest kids are girls, when the oldest turned 16 and started to drive I bought a 1968 Camaro Covertable (red). When the next one turned 16, she got the Camaro and so on down the line. They thought I was the greatest Dad in the world and didn't find out until years later how I always knew where they were. I always had people caming up to me and saying "hey Bill, I saw your red convertable over at such and such a place) The girls learned they couldn't get away with anything, but didn't know how I knew! I can switch from possible to probable for Rally. Just need to clear a couple things then made reservation.

Had to chuckle when I read that brought back memories. We lived with our grandparents. My grandfather would get onto my brother once in a while telling him he knew he'd been driving too fast. Finally let him in on his secret. Grandad was a retired salesman and had lots of big parts catalogs for when he went around to factories. He stacked them neatly in the trunck on one side in a box. If my bro came back with the catologs strewn all over the trunk.....busted.

I've been bragging about this trip to a few of my coworkers and I am really looking forward to it. My wife and I are leaving for a 7 day Carribbean cruise this Friday that departs on Sunday. We are spending two days visiting my uncle in Tampa before we depart. Kawgirl:
There is a 95% chance I will be there. I hope to have my camper sold and Nomad bought by the first week in March. Elkins is only 150 miles from me, so I will probably head down on Wednesday. As soon as the camper is sold, I'll have my bike.

Wompus great! We'll add you to the list. Mobboss hope you can make it! Todd I made my reservation for Wed night also.

Note to all: I hope Kawgirl doesn't mind my mentioning but if you noticed she has not been on the board a whole lot lately, her dad was just recently released from the hospital and they have arranged hospice care at home. She is spending a lot of time helping her parents out between trying to work. I know she will appreciate thoughts and prayers.

I'll let you know. Told hubbie wanted to do this..he is mumbling something about he read in one of the motorcycle mags that on down the road ....like year or two later it has latent effects on the bike...thought about writing into motorcycle consumer news and ask if they have heard of this causing engine problems after a prolonged period of time. :-/ ???

Hey Kawgirl!!!

Please put me down for a late afternoon arrival on Friday riding over from DC. I'll be leaving for Texas early Sun AM

This will be a great opportunity for a rest stop on the return leg of my June tour from Texas to Ft. Wayne, IN (4 day Conference) then Niagara Falls, Philly and DC.

Looking forward to putting some faces to the names here.

I gotcha down! I need to call Super 8 and make sure folks are still getting the reduced rate.
