I built a camera mount for my camera that clamps onto the bars. I was too cheap to buy one, so I made one.

I'm going for a ride with Ells for lunch tomorrow, so I'll see how the pictures turn out.

If it works fine, you can make one for $6.00, less if you don't buy stainless threaded parts.

I can't even tell what that is????

It looks like it should be ok, as long as it doesn't vibrate to much.

I can tell a lot of dust when I see it, though http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

There is the rubber cut from an old grip cut to go around the bar, then it clamps to the rubber. There is another piece of rubber under the wing nut.

That wing nut in the picture locks the screw down in the slot cut in the top piece. The slot is so that it can be moved forward and back as needed to aim the camera.

I also have another wing nut that will go on the threaded part upside down, to lock the camera on.

It would make more sense if I took a picture of the camera mounted, but with one camera that's not so easy to do :)

I made the exact same thing for an iron butt ride i did last month. The pictures turned out okay and the videos turned out great.

I'd be interested in seeing it http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif the camera mount ::) that is. I like to see if you guys get a reflection from the shield.

Yes there is a reflection-depending on the light angle.

Fish was right about the reflections. I went for a ride with Ells at lunch and tried it out. There is a reflection from the silver on the camera. I'll post a video after it gets done uploading to youtube.

I'll look it over and see if it's something that some black felt in the right place will fix.

It's easier to ride when you aren't holding the camera in one hand and riding with the other, but my arm was pretty good at keeping the vibrations out and keeping it even with the horizon when dipping into a turn.

I have my camera on a ram mount just to the outside of the shield, no reflections but it does get hammered with bugs http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/>

as you can see I don't have much room for anything else I took the GPS off the speedo and the ram mount on the left is where I put the digital camera

Holy Crap Fish...LOL...so how did you run the plumbing for the "kitchen sink" ...you've got everything else, just assuming you've got a sink too http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Maybe using a mirror with no flash?

I was using the garmin on the speedo until the handle bar mount for the Lowrance came in. I wanted to see which I liked better and vibrated the least. The one with the most vibration I gave to the wife http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif ::) ;) http://s2.images.proboards.com/lipsrsealed.gif
Some times I could use some plunbing on the bike, like a drain hose :)

I tried it out on Ells and got reflections. Vibration wasn't too bad for bad roads, but the reflection is distracting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaqpxNMHZEE

I could mount it further out on the bars, but don't want bugs and debris hitting the lens.

I Had it zoomed in a bit on Ells, and wonder if it would have looked more stable not zoomed.

I'm still wondering how to use some black flannel and Velcro or something to lose the reflections.

Do the rest of you get such crappy sound from your camera?

looked like a NICE ride. Agree with the reflection being bothersome but found myself dismissing it as I watched the ride;) Loved the finish;) Ha!

Maybe if the camera is right up against shield it might cut down on the reflection.
As far as noise you might be able to mute it but I would think you would want to be able to hear the bikes pipes. If its out past the shield you will get alot of wind noise.
Otherwise it looks great. I also think the farther out on the handlebars the more vibration you'll get. MY 2cents
Trip would be able to shed some light on the subject.

Dan, looks like the reflection is of the speedo cowling; handle bars and etc. Covering them in some manner to "kill" the chrome reflection would be the only way I could think of.

Otherwise the video looked good; and I didn't think the sound was all that bad.

The ending was a sort of a fluke, we just stopped to chat at place called Wondervu. It wasn't like they were waiting for us. With quite a few miles to go we didn't partake.

The camera worked pretty good I thought. while there is a bit of reflection, I think its off the windshield, Id rather have that and protect the camera from the bugs and dust. Considering all that these cameras can do the sound is ok for a pinhole style microphone.
It looked like a nice road to ride on with all the curves.

Good eye, I went back and looked at the video and could clearly see the key reflection in the sliver cowling. I thought that the silver of my camera was reflecting back up at the windshield.

Might be a way to rig a magnetic reflection shield on the tank in front of the speedo.

glwilson

Yeah... it is clearly your cowling and front edge/top of the tank.

For a temporary fix; try using some matte-finish, black colored cotton material drapped over the front end of the tank and cowling. Hold it down with some strong magnets or tie-downs of some sort.

If that works... then a more permanent fix could be made. You might even find someone to sew something like that with pockets for the magnets.

Cool looking ride though.

OK I tried the video camera through the shield lot of reflection of the speedo etc.
I put my hand with a black glove on over the cowl and didn't have a reflection and couldn't see the glove. So the idea of a black cloth should work. Although it was cloudy skies.

there is more vibration farther out on the handlebars, so I put the ram mount as close to the triple tree as possible (I have a windshield bag) next I put a small piece of thin rubber next to the camera and up against the shield. I turned on the camera and turned the bars back and forth, shut off the camera and took it in the house and hooked it to the TV. no reflection. I hope to take it for a ride sometime today and see how much vibration I get.

I also have mine next to the clamp, and didn't seem to have too much vibration. I was thinking about some black felt and magnets on the tank to hid reflections, but that seems cumbersome. Thinking like you, I thought it would only take a small shield at the lens to kill all of the reflections. I'm not getting the full picture of how you kept the rubber in place against the shield?

I can see how it wouldn't take much at all to kill the reflections at that point. How exactly did you do it?

until I take a pic and up and down load it http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif All I used was a small piece of velcro on the BLACK rubber and side of camera. I'll let you know how it works, tomorrow for sure.

this is what I did, I cut the rubber to the shape of the shield

Know this is what I was thinking as in a hood

this is the view from the front, of course I would cut it down to fit. If the first pic works out, fine and dandy

Thanks for the pics. I had another idea that I thought would be great. Take one of those static cling pieces of tint that you slap on a window and peel it back off to place again, and put right on the windshield above the camera lens.

I went to pep boys auto parts, and they didn't have it. Went to Checkers, didn't have it either. Went to Target, same problem. It looks like you can't get one anymore. They used to be everywhere.

just that small piece rubber did the trick, no reflection. With the video camera mounted close to the center of the bars makes a big difference with the viberation.... I just have to remember to open the shutter, big DAH!!
Now I have to buy another digital camera for the still pics. mine took a crap.

You suction cup mounted your GPS to your speedo. That is priceless, but how well does it work?
