Just a tad bit of overkill I would say ::)

Ummmmm...I actually have three questions. ::)
(1) How much weight are you actually looking at putting on them???? http://s2.images.proboards.com/lipsrsealed.gif
(2) Are you an engineer by trade? :-/
(3) How much did it cost? ???
WOW! That is what I call total "re-en-force-ment." http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

The frame seems to sit considerably lower than the bike frame. I wonder if they will further limit the ability to lean the bike over in a corner. They may dig into the pavement sooner.

I bet you don't have to worry about the floorboards dragging anymore! It looks like you could tear chunks out of the asphalt with that rig!

Weight won't be a problem.
No I'm not an engineer but have done this type of work for yrs. also did structural design to a couple Catilinlinas (pby)
Cost was about 30 bucks

Actually the floorboards will hit first..just the angle of pic taken. Here is a side view

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u319/blackiedog/000_0062.jpgAs you can see from the side view..mounts are not lower than the frame

I think the craftsmanship is fantastic. You have a real talent.

What Beezer said. Different angle puts a whole new slant on things.

You did a really nice job on them, they dont look like they will flex much under your weight.
Thank you..I appreciate your comments. I've also made a lite bar set-up, a luggage rack without the sissy bar, rectifier cover and fender bib (seen in avatar) Currently I'm in mid-stream of making a solo rack without the pillion.
Very nice looking ride you have ringadingh

Thanks for the compliment, When I seen the bike on a website, I knew thats the bike I wanted to buy, so I did.

That is some real sweet fabrication. It looks pretty professional to me.
My hat's off to you!
Look good but, all those holes would be filled grasshoppers here in Nebraska.

Here are some other items I also made...so far my cost is about 100 bucks..and many hours.
Hey Blackiedog,
You ever think about moving the floor boards, brake and shifter forward a bit? I'm tall and thought that would be a great mod. Something I've imagined but never completely thought through.
Tomk
Never thought about that..as I've made the pegs to fit me. I'm only 6' so everything is comfy..but I would imagine if legs were longer ..the floorboards would get uncomfortable..hmm...now ya got me thinking!

You have me impressed. I really like the auxiliary light configuration. I've wanted to add them to my Nomad but don't think the price of the aux light bar is worth it. Your design really has me thinking of doing the modification and simplifying the cost. Have you considered making and selling the brackets?

^ and along with the brackets, the solo rack as well
Dui546...the lite brackets were relatively easy to make..if you have vice, hacksaw, files and a drill..you could make them up yourself. I used 3"x2" angle aluminum..make a template out of poster paper first and your on your way. I do this type of work as a hobby to relieve stress but if I had to do it again as a job..hmm..then the fun would be gone. I'm willing to share ideas though. Here is a simple rectifier cover that goes with the footpeg theme. http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u319/blackiedog/rect.jpg

I'll bet you could make a good looking trunk rack. I haven't been a fan of the Wompus rack because of its looks. If I had your skill, I'd have one that looked like a factory piece.

Do you have any other pics of the light mounts? I'd be very interested in fabricating myself a set of those.

You have definitely given me a great idea. Thanks Blackidog! I will be looking for some raw materials.

Blackidog, where would I look for some aluminum, thick enough and long enough to make a rack to hold up a trunk?
I don't even know where to start looking.

Dan,
It's funny you mention that, because I am looking for the same thing. My first thought was to try Home Depot or Lowe's, they might carry what you're looking for. I'm sure there must be local industrial metal suppliers, but they probably don't deal in small quantities. I did find a couple of places online that specialize in smaller quantities for hobbyists, etc.

Very helpful, the stainless looks like a good way to go too perhaps.

Stainless is much harder to work with. It looks nice and lasts forever, but it's very difficult to cut and drill.
Your right about the stainless..hard to work with..what you want is 6061 aluminum. easy to work with yet strong enough. 5/8" round stock for support and 1/2" round stock for internals of the rack. If you try a metalsupermarket or try a heating and plumbing shop. Aluminum is pricey. The 5/8" is around 2.50'. You can get aluminum in a variety of shapes and size's. Usually lengths are around 16' and they charge you about 5 bucks to per cut...so for instance if you only want 6'..they will charge you for the 16' piece. I get a 16' and pay 5 bucks to cut so it can fit in my pickup. Most shops have a scrap or end cuts area..you will then pay for either weight or dimension. In my opinion its not worth going to a scrap yard for pieces. Usually the pieces have welds or dents or scrathes..better off buying new.
If you could make me a set of these, I would love them.

Dan that is a nice clean set-up but with that kind of length from the mounts and then the foot peg horizontal there would be to much flex and bend. That is why I went with the support braceing that works equally to all directions..therefore..no flex
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u319/blackiedog/support.jpghttp://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u319/blackiedog/000_0068.jpg Here is how the support strenght works against each angle.

I remember I made a Bowie knife out of a solid piece of stainless in metal shop in high school (I'll bet they wouldn't let you do that these days). It took forever to file/grind down the tang for the handle. That was one nice knife when I was done with it. Razor sharp, too.
Yep..I bet it was nice..the best part about it probably was that "YOU" made it. Sounds to me that dui546, dan lund and catusjack are all about to be customisers..cool

Went to Lowe's on my lunch today. They have a decent selection of aluminum and steel stock (angle, bar, rod, etc) but nothing in aluminum over .125" thickness, and no aluminum plate. Still have to hit Home Depot, but I don't suspect they'll have what I'm looking for, either. I did have time to swing by Harbor Freight and pick up a bench vise. Their Pittsburgh brand vises are on sale right now, BTW.
Try calling a machine shop and ask them where they get their aluminum
