I got my "new to me" Nomad 1500 on Tuesday. Finally got it out for a decent ride today. The seat ain't doing it for me.

Any recommendations on an aftermarket seat that will comfortably accommodate a 6'4" 300+ lb. 34" pant leg rider?

I am close to Bill Mayer saddles but had a really bad previous experience dealing with Bill's ego, That's not happening again.

Anyone have any experience with a ride-in at Corbin for a person of larger stature? Their stock saddles seem to favor smaller persons.

Im not big and the stock seat still sucks. Mustang is my fav choice.

I've heard a lot of folks say the Mustang pushes them forward. I know I couldn't handle that.

Never heard anyone say anything bad about a Day Long.

In fact, as soon as I get some pictures taken, I'll be ordering one. I'm not as tall as you, but I'm a big guy, too.

All I will say is that a Mustang may not be good enough. I am a little bigger and I will say that if you are over 300 and you butt isn't well padded or big, you will get too much pressure and pain. The mustang may put you more forward and higher too. My guess is that a Russell is the best bet as it will be made for you. I'd like to send my Mustang to them this coming winter, buy a stock seat, send that and sell the mustang. A friend of mine sent a mustang to them and now she swears by it. I honestly have to say I haven't heard anyone complain that a russell was a bad choice.

Check out Ultimate Seats also. They have one for the 1500 (see the other seat thread that was on here recently for some pictures) I'm 235-240 on most days and that is the way I'm going to go before next riding season. I would buy it now, but I have some other things I am taking care of now.

Gregg, I agree with you. It is a tough choice. I dont care much to pay $700 to grand for a seat that may not fit my bottom. I admit though, I have never heard anyone complain about a daylong. But you have to order and wait.

I am not an iron butt rider and dont never intend to be. Riding interstate highways is not my deal. I just prefer a few hours on the backroads and a out of the way bar or diner. However the stock seat is barely adequate for that.

My wife and I have been doing some research on the net about redoing our stock seat. We want to keep the seat cover but redo the padding. We bought an extra stock Nomad seat (cheap) for our experiment. We just havent started our seat project yet.

I love my mustang, I do think it pushed me forward a bit, but being 5'10" it worked for me.. I also didn't think it was true.. but after putting 2000 miles on the seat it actually feels better than when I first got it. zero complaints so far here.

Hubby and I swear by Corbin seats! We both have them on our bikes and taken many long trips without problems. The biggest test for me was when we rode to Charleston, WV for 10 1/2 hours and we never complained about pain!

By the way, I hear from Mustang owners that the seat moves you higher and forward. The corbin moves you lower and back. After I got a Corbin on my 900 I was forced to get risers so I could reach the handlebars leaning all the way in the seat

Being similar in stature, I feel your pain... or did until I put the stock seat on the shelf. I found a steal of a deal on a Mustang set (sans backrest) and while not perfect it is certainly an improvement. Were I going to hand over the big bucks I would probably have gone with the Russell. The "push forward" factor of the Mustang is the only real drawback to the Mustang (along with the lack of a backrest), and for the immediate future it will do. The first real long-haul test will be next month's trek to Custer.

Had the Mustang with an AirHawk and a Sheepskin and it was barely better than stock. Day Long all the way now. Much better ride quality, but not cheap.

I contacted Allen at Mean City Cycles about modifying my Mustang seat. Here is what he said:


"The way the Mustang has the seat pan shaped, there is little to no
rearward movement in the seat unfortunately. We can change the foam over
to our memory foam which will improve the ride but as far as positioning
goes there isn't much movement in the driver's area...I know this isn't
what your wanting to hear but I do not want to mislead you and what can
and can't be done. We have worked on about 75 Mustang seats the past few
months and the angle they are putting on the back of the seat pan just
won't allow us to change the riding position much...sorry."


So, back to the drawing board. I suppose I will just sell it later on in the year and get something else, whatever that is. Unfortunately, I sold my stock seat.

I have really struggled with the seat issue. I can't see myself dishing out that kind of money with a chance that it may or may not be pain free for 6-8 hours at a time.

I am starting to think that some people like myself are just shaped to the point that nothing will work for a full day and the best we can expect is to "change the feel" by throwing on a bead seat, air hawk, gel pad, or sheepskin every gas stop.

It is no surprise to me as I haven't owned a car that I can drive all day long without getting uncomfortable as well....anywhere from Suburban, 4Runners, Camry's, Maxima, pickups big and small.

I tried my beadrider seat yesterday and it helped temporarily and allowed airflow so the "burn" never got intense but it was still there. Tried the air hawk (buddy's) awhile ago...same thing but no airflow.

I have heard people swear by Mustang, Russel, and Corbin but then others have had issues with Mustang and Corbin. Haven't heard any negatives with Russel but I suspect that not as many are sold either.

Day Longs are made in Northern California. I did the drive in service. They fit it to you while you wait. It would be a long ride for you but might be worth it to get the perfect fit. You can't beat the Day long lifetime warranty either.

I went and bought this on Ebay. It looks like it will put me a bit further back. We'll see... At least I'll have a second seat to experiment with.

When I had Mean City Cycles modify a seat for me, I bought a stock seat for $50 and sent that to them.

Now I'll be ordering the Russell Day Long, so I'll send them the stock seat and keep the MCC seat as a back up.

The good thing about keeping the extra seat is if you're going to have someone work on one, you don't lose riding time!

So you are saying you weren't satisfied with MCC seat? Which options did you get?
