This post is for the other newbies out there, hopefully it will prevent you from making the same stupid mistakes I do. This weekend I was just taking off from my house, heading over my aunts house to help her out with something. Anyway, as I was pulling out of my street I thought I should give her a call to let her know I was on my way, and that I would be on my bike. She is elderly and very nervous about strangers, and to this point did not know I started riding. So I pull over to make the call, she tells me she is feeling well and would prefer to take care of things next week, then continued to talk my ear off for 30 - 45 mins.
The lesson I learned from this was when you shutdown your bike to make a call be sure to turn off the key otherwise your battery may go dead, as mine did. Luckily I was only a block from home...

It may be a sign your due for a new battery, Unless you had a few lights left on it should have been able to withstand that time.

My favorite part of riding is the disconnect, no emails, text messages, phone calls etc... Usually the phone is stowed away and used only in case of emergencies or to let those at home know that my quick ride was turning into a longer one http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif

I assume that all the lights stay on until I turn the key off, I will have to check that. But I agree and I am going to have the battery checked out, I was told by the previous owner that it was replaced last summer...

The lights will stay on, and you left them on for long enough to discharge the battery.
Hopefully it will still take a charge, and if so it should give you a few more years of service.

At least you pulled over to make the call. I have seen more than once a biker talking on a hand held cell phone while driving. Surprised no coffee in the other hand.

When I'm on the bike, the phone's in the hard bag. My wife knows I'm not acessible. If I'm on a long ride, I check it every stop.

Well, you learnt something, so it is all good. My phone goes in my $9 windshield bag until I park. I'm with the majority, time on the bike is time away from all the crap.
