View Full Version : One less stupid thing to do
This morning, I went through the normal routine of starting the Nomad, loading the saddlebags and such. But this morning was different. I was distracted after loading the left saddlebag and rode to work with my keys still in the lock on the saddlebag door. The door was latched but unlocked. There was really no way the keys would have fell out. When I got to work, I thought I left the keys at home. Called my better half at home and she could not find the keys. As I talked to her, I walked around the bike and found them hanging in the door. DOH! Mental note to self.....#45983. I plan to never do that again! http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

It's amazing how a slight distraction can throw your routine off. I was on a ride with some guys in Mammoth, AZ. We had stopped for gas and then took a short break and I opened my trunk up for gloves or something and left the keys hanging in the latch. Unlike the saddlebags, my keys wouldn't have lasted long hanging there. Luckily, one of the guys behind me noticed and pulled up along side and handed them to me.

I'm glad it is a 'feature' of the Nomad bags that the key doesn't seem to fall out. I've been guilty 3 times in a year and a half ::)

It's only a matter of time for me. I left my keys locked in the van last week. D-oh!

I read a thread I think on this board where someone left the door open on the bag with the keys hanging. If I remember correctly a cager let him know the door was opened. It'll probably happen to me now that I brought it up......

I have done the same thing a few times, that's why I keep a spare key on the bike.

I know that it's inevitable that I'm going to do something that I know better than to do. Therefore, I keep a spare key for both my car and the bike in my wallet. Of course, that only works as long as I remember to actually have my wallet on me.
(Don't even ask how I know that!) :(

How do you guys start the bike or keep it running without the key in the ignition?

You can take the key out with the switch in the ON position.
Some folks like this feature. I don't.

That is one good thing about my 1500. Key must be in ignition at all times. Pain in the ass when you need to open the bags.

To carry this a little further, the feature is only on the 1600 Nomad. I like it, personally.
You use the key to unlock the ignition and turn to the "On" position, then you can remove the key. You don't need the key to lock the ignition, you just turn the stich to "Off" and it locks. If you only turn it part way to "off", then you can turn it back to "on" without the key.

Which I love. I have done the riding around with the key in the bag. Even rode home from the doctors the other day and I never latched my helmet. You know you have arrived to senilty if you ride with the saddle bag lid open. I HAVE NOT DONE THAT YET. Maybe somebody has though. :-)

Hey Doc, I was on my way to the supermarket one day and couldn't remember my beloved Boxer's name. I actually called home asking my wife what my dog's name was. She wanted me to pull over so she could come and see about me. She thought I was having a stroke or something else. She said she could understand me forgetting her name but not my dog's.

I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Rode 100 miles, when I pulled over for lunch. When I went to open the bag, there were my keys....All of my keys on one ring along with my security token for logging in to my company network remotely. I didn't have a spare key with me.....But, now I do! I keep my spare key in my jacket. Boy was I lucky.

Ya'll are making me feel better about myself. On a group ride last month I couldn't find my key when we were preparing to leave the restraunt. Patted myself down, emptied pockets and was trying to think "what to do" a hundred miles from home w/ no key. Found it, in the saddlebag lock, where I'd put it two minutes earlier.

I haven't even owned my nomad that long and I've already rode a couple of miles with the key in the saddlebag for a few miles. Although i think I've pretty much got it sunk in my head now to always pull the key out.

How many here have left for a 200 mile round trip to the end of the world (Grand Isle, LA) and stopped at a restaurant only to realize they left their wallet home. Wifey doesn't have hers either. That's the furthest I've ever stretched 1/2 tank of gas.

I haven't left my keys but on the way to our spring rally I did lay my gloves on my trunk and ride off, Jamie pulled up beside me and told me I had lost one so I stopped and looked around didn't see the other one so I just rode on, a little while later we stopped and Bea said it looked like a war zone behind me first one glove then my flag pole and flag I have had for years and then the other glove, I guess Jamie spent most of his time dodging my stuff http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

I like the fact you can remove the key while the bike is running. BUT !....The mistake I make, and I'm going to end up doing what BD just did, and that's replacing my battery. Because what I have a habit of doing is to ride up,...put the kickstand down. {which shuts off the motor at the same time, as you know} and then remove helmet and gloves, get off bike and pull my key out.......leaving the lights on.
