Since I will now be riding to Custer I will be wiring up an outlet to power my ipod (cause the battery won't last 6 hours) and am looking for a way to attach it. Now I use the term attach very loosely because I do not really want a RAM mount.

2 reasons for that. First they are not cheap, Second I have a large ipod (30GB) and that means it has a real hard drive in it which translates to delicate moving parts that are subject to vibration.

I was just wondering other than a ram mount what does everyone else use???

Here is one idea I had, just to plug it in and toss in this bag...

You can make one using aluminum (the kind used for door kick plates)
However....I am using some RAM mount stuff to attach to handlebars
Zero Vibration here.
Here's mine.
I have my iPod in a rubber case and then I slide it into the holder I made.

I use a FM transmitter that I plug my Ipod into. Its goes into my cigarette lighter and plays through my stereo speakers. I only have a 4gb Ipod and Im not positive if it would hold a 30gb, but probably would, as it has adjustable sides that grip the Ipod.

I have a 30GB Zune, with an internal hard drive and I use a RAM mount. I don't recall hearing it skip. Ever. As I recall, it wasn't horribly expensive.

The transmitter I use was on sale at Canadian Tire here for only $10.00. I'll try to get a picture of it posted later on.

It's not skipping I am worried about. Eventually shock and vibration will kill a hard drive.

They work much like a record player.

I know how they work...20 years in IT. ::)

I just don't see it as a big problem.

I am only concerned because a friend hard mounted one on his ultra and it died. I don't want to lose a $300 unit is all.

Of course I have always trusted you guys so here goes....

Where is the best place to get a ram mount?

Wow thanks, those are half the price of the other ones I found.

Hey CJ, which one you got?

I see they have multiple bases that can be used with the cradle.

Can't you just put it in your pocket? Better yet, follow your wife, have her roll down the window's and turn up the radio or cd player up real loud.

http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gifI have mine in a tank bag. No problems at all and my charges last way more than 6 hours. I've ridden over 10 hrs and not lost all the power. I have the 80 gig classic

I knew that. It wasn't necessarily meant for you. I know there gets to be confusion on how some of them work.

I think I found a Ram on amazon for $26

I would like to know more of how you guys rigged these stereos on your bikes and how pricey it is?
Thanks

I haven't used my small MP3 on the bike yet but think I will start using it on longer trips. Just plan to keep it in my jacket pocket and charge at night.

Someday I will get satallite radio for the bike. I have it in the car and love it on long trips.

I have a shuffle and it's really small, if I'm in ear plugs, I clip it to me, if I'm on speakers, I clip it on my windshield bag.

I am going to use mine with earbuds but if you look at the photo refugio posted that is about the simplest setup you can get. Everything bolts on to the bars. You can get that setup for about $100 - $150 if you shop around.

It all depends what route you choose to go, I have a fairing that my stereo and speakers are mounted in, so by the time you have all that stuff installed on the bike it can add up. If your just looking for a stereo and speakers I would imagine you could get set up for a couple hundred dollars.

I have installed a radio and speakers today. My question is, where is the best place to wire the radio so it only comes on when you start the bike? It will default to a set station I know. I was thinking about the headlight. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif Any ideas?

I wouldn't wire it directly to the headlight circuit. If it was me, I'd use the running light circuit to trigger a relay to power the radio. There is usually a separate wire to power the memory for the clock and station presets. I think you'd be okay connecting that to the accessory connector in the headlight bucket. Yes, it will draw juice all the time, but the load on the system should be negligible.

If you just want to be able to listen to your ipod through speakers what do you need? Do you have to have an amp, etc....or is speakers all you need?
Thanks

An iPod doesn't have enough oomph to drive a set of speakers. You would need to bump it up with an amplifier. You can buy speakers with an amp built in, that's about the easiest way to go.
